Big Bad Noise Live Review 17/10/03 Lansdowne Hotel
By Ron Baumann
Pop rock is great when you want to see a room full of toes tapping and heads bouncing and that is exactly what Sonika achieved tonight. A great looking front woman with both voice and moved perfectly suited to this kind of stuff. Drummer boy certainly did the hard yards yet still looked like he was having a ball. Guitar and bass players, both very accomplished musicians and I don't think I could have picked a mistake no matter how hard I tried. I'm not to sure if the keyboards are absolutely neccessary but they certainly didn't take anything at all away from the performance and from what I was told tonight he provided the desired eye candy for the half tanked hormanal teenagers of the female variety...sorry I didn't ask the males if they felt the same way. They got on with the music without too much rambling or banter. They didn't stop after every song to tune and fix stuff up. Very professional indeed. Personally I would have like to see a few more guitar solo bits as this guy is certainly up to the task but all in all a very entertaining little set. I got it, the audience got it and even the sound guy got it for a change. Well worth a look.

Delusions of Adequacy Song Review (Trueman)
By Michael Collins, Rochester, New York.
L- fi synth power-pop with the emphasis being the word pop. The mix is clean and sharp, and the female vocals are clear and strong. This sounds like a good fun bad that will shine in the live arena.
The verses are laden with early 80s-style synth riffs while the slightly noisy guitar kick in for the chorus. Singer Jayne (who apparently has her own vocal FX stomp box) sings of fame and the attention of cameras. Perhaps that will be a forerunner to the attention that the band will receive in the future. She wants people to look at her, and they just might when they find out more about her and this band.
These Sydney-siders sound like an Australian answer to Moonpools and Caterpillars. That’s a very good thing indeed. Their self-confessed influences include No Doubt. That gives you an indication of where this band is coming from, but lets hope they don’t pick up any fashion tips from Gwen Stefani.
With hooks big enough to carry a weapon of mass destruction and a beat that insists on the listener to dance like a maniac, this band is really going places if it gets that lucky break. There is an energy here that’s as infectious at botulism. This is fun power pop.

Last comp winner review
There were two other bands playing at the Lansdowne Hotel with Sonika (17/10/03) one being ToneOrange. General Feedback: It was great to see such energy from Jayne, sure she would go totally off if there was a lil more stage area available. Phil excellent enthusiasm you got a lot of people hoppin with you. Is a nice change to see guys play live and still smile instead of the almost standard "sneer"
Keep up the tunes... Awesome!!!
Cheers L

demo comments
Firstly I like to say that I am privileged that you chose me to check out Sonika. Nice to be told you have great music tastes. When you first mentioned 4 guys including a keyboardist and a female singer, my first thought was back to the Canadian band The Weekend www.rocktheweekend.com who supported Skulker on their album tour in May. You may know the song 80's Rockstar which was played quite a bit of Triple J at one stage. I was able to get to quite a few gigs and was able to be good friends with them. So now your favour to me now is to check out their website and have a listen to their stuff and pass it on to the band because after listening to Sonika, there are defiantly elements from The Weekend in there, especially in Tick Tock.
Now my thoughts on the music: My first thought when I heard Jayne's voice was, wow. My first reaction when I think demo tracks is something rough and a rough recording rather than something this polished. Would like to know where she sang before because she sounds great. Overall it sounds great let me reinforce that by the fact that I am writing this email at 3am in the morning after coming back from a Skulker gig. Very interested in the history of the band after reading your email.
I am a religious Drum Media reader so I'll add you to my list of band that I look out for.
Time for some sleep. Rock On. Colin

It's very No Doubt and a bit like Good Charlotte (with a female singer instead, of course) I did enjoy the songs, but I am a big No Doubt fan. GWiZZ

hey mat guess what i'm a huge fan in the making and is she the chick from save ferris coz she sounds like her i'm a huge fan of them 'mistaken' is my fave song of theirs. tick tock is good but if you can make it slightly harder durign the verses and bring a huge work up to the chorus, this will excite the audience thats what they want. superhero, you dont have to change at all thats a great song. but tell me wont catch the audience' ear as much as the others. on a general oppinion i wish you luck and i know you'll be makin some huge bucks soon. all i request is a back stage pass to your melbourne gigs :) coz i really appreciate your music. now get out there. i've downloaded them and have burned them i'll give them to a few mates tomoro see what they think, i'd love to get your demo cd i think it deserves recognition. good luck hope to hear from you soon and i'll see you at a gig soon, hope to meet up for a chat also. cheers, good luck to the band. Toyah
and yes i would pay big bucks to see them play alongside skulker!!!
if you wanna send me that demo e-mail me back and i'll give you an address or put them online for me somewhere.

Hey dude!
Sorry for the late (and short) reply, but here goes!:
I thought the songs were good, original and addictive. I liked that Superhero song the most, or maybe it was the most catchy. I guess that one is a 1RR track.
I'd look forward to hearing more from you, maybe seeing you on tour (if you should ever make it to Melbourne.....)
Thanks Heath

Ok I listened to "superhero". hmmm have a very unique sound here. Iw asnt expecting a chick singer.I have no problem with that, imo its a good thing. but putting a label on your sound is hard. The music made me think of SUM41 and the vocals of GARBAGE (the band ;) :P ).

wicked stuff
Hi,
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to have a listen to some music from Sonika. Top stuff. The first bands that popped into my mind was: Divinyls (noticed Jayne counted them among her influences) No Doubt (ditto. ESPECIALLY noticed it in "Trueman" LOVING that song.) 16DD not sure how well known they are to the industry types.
I don't really want to go into a spiel of long-winded comparisons for the band's sake but, ironically, I've really only made a superficial list of bands I believe influence the general style of riffs and vocals. But I think if I go on any longer you'll begin to hate me.On the upside, I'm going to try and make it to the Bondi Hotel to get a "live" opinion. Hope this helped you out a bit. In the immortal words of Jeff Buckley, all I want to do is love everyone. Yours E

cool
DUDE. which side of the blue mountains? Im guessing your on the penrith side and up wentworth falls way on that side. Im over at Kurrajong heights myself. you know up the mountain from richmond ;) that has a really clean sound for being recorded in a loungeroom with no editing, I must say! If thats the audience your looking at then I reckon your smack bang on the moolah. Just for your info, my friend who is a 15 year old female likes Sonika. so at first glance it looks good for you. :D

right on
Hi, Unfortunately I only had time to download the first song and listen to it, but all the same I think there is definately some talent there! The instrumental part reminds me of bands like Less Than Jake, At The Drivein, etc. And your vocals is almost like a softer version of Razel and Gazoonger Attack crossed with a bit of the older style Superjesus. Anyways hope this helps, and you are sucessful in signing your band, let me know how you go - Rh
